STHS Children’s receives donation from Dutch Bros
Over $10,000 received from Dutch Bros initiative.

The latest Buck For Kids Day initiative led Dutch Bros to donate $10,665 for SOUTH TEXAS HEALTH SYSTEM CHILDREN’S.
For the second year in a row Dutch Bros directed its Buck for Kids Day proceeds to benefit the Child Life program at STHS Children’s that supports Rio Grande Valley children navigating hospital stays.
Young patients entering hospital care typically develop fear and anxiety from multiple sources including unknown surroundings and needles alongside medical equipment with separation from loved ones and unclear circumstances regarding their condition.
The Rio Grande Valley’s inaugural pediatric facility South Texas Health System Children’s dedicates itself to enhancing hospital experiences for its young patients through stress and illness-related anxiety reduction.
Staff members at STHS Children’s use the facility’s Child Life program to work with doctors and nurses and social workers and other health team members to fulfill the social and emotional needs of patients along with their families’ cultural and developmental requirements.
Kim Davis, MBA, BSN, RN, Pediatric Administrator at STHS Children’s explains that their Child Life program stands central to supporting child health and wellness within hospital environments. Our staff uses their specialized expertise to assist patients and families with coping through offering essential preparation education and play-based distraction and coping tools.
STHS Children’s Hospital has enjoyed long-term support from local businesses and community groups which helps families and children manage hospital-related stress. The facility uses donations to deliver essential patient support services as well as sibling and family programs while acquiring sensory equipment and patient-oriented resources including art, music and recreational items alongside animal-assisted therapy and diagnosis-specific educational materials and therapeutic play.
For the second year in a row the Auxiliary to South Texas Health System received funding from Dutch Bros as part of their charitable work for the STHS Children’s Child Life program.
During its annual Buck for Kids Day event Dutch Bros. donates one dollar from every beverage purchase to nonprofits that serve children through mentorship and support programs in local communities across the United States.
The Auxiliary to STHS collected $10,665.89 during Buck for Kids Day September 2024 from 13 Dutch Bros. locations in the Valley which marked a 491% growth from the $1,800 donation received from two locations the previous year.
John Darms who operates Dutch Bros locally expressed his team’s deep gratitude for the chance to contribute to South Texas Health Systems Children’s Hospital. Our team at Dutch Bros exists to create positive change so we are grateful for this chance to do good in our community.
The Auxiliary to STHS dedicates the funds to maintain vital programming through the Child Life program at STHS Children which ensures hospital patients and their families receive safety and comfort while understanding their needs.
Through the Dutch Bros’ Buck for Kids campaign patients will experience significant improvements in their hospital experience according to STHS System Director of Marketing & Public Relations Tom Castañeda. The donation we received from Dutch Bros. has become the most significant gift we have ever received thus far it means everything to us.
